Virginia near the beach

Virginia near the beach
I pulled my love close
to me,
Her eyes never turned from
the horizon
at Norfolk near the sea.

How far to the horizon?
I asked my love
she said,
It’s forever to the horizon
forever and a day.

Not how long to the horizon,
I mean
How far away?
It’s forever to the horizon,
forever I say.

Virginia near the beach
I turned my loves eyes away,
But she never lost sight
of the horizon
at Norfolk near the sea.

How distant is your heart?
I asked my love
she said,
My heart is there on the horizon,
there, not far away.

But you said the horizon is
forever,
forever and a day.
How can something be so close
and yet so far away?

you cannot see my heart?
no I can’t my love,
You cannot reach the horizon?
no, its too far away.
Oh, but it’s close enough
to touch.
What more can I say?
There’s nothing more to say my love
nothing more to say.

Virginia near the beach
I set my love free,
and set sail for the horizon
as Norfolk near the sea.
