You never want to go anywhere
seeing as how you hold
what foolish nonsense a dance be.
But this time you’re going, by God,
so put on your best;
You’ll ride up front with me.
Can’t you feel the excitement from
over the ridge?
Why it’s a county social
for the great Independence Day.
Don’t start groaning
'bout how silly people get at these.
Just keep quiet
if you’ve got nothing good to say.
Yes, there’s Mr. Purdy
dancing on his one good leg.
Ain’t it a sight to see?
No, I don’t think it queer
at all;
It’s natural as can be.
Yeah, I can hear the boys
out in the woods,
sounds like they’ve had
a bit too much.
But don’t you go gettin’
high and mighty bout’ that,
they deserve a day off
from their hard work.
Poor Ms. Penelope
it’s her one day out,
she’s been in that chair
most her life.
It’s a day her whole
family’s been getting together
and this is the big night.
It’s all these people
I brought you here to see.
Some of them you
hardly know.
They’re more than local gossip
for some twitching tongue
to cast disapprobation upon.
Well? Don’t you see what I mean?
Just take a look over-head,
See how the stars tend to
congregate in clusters and constellations,
never on their own.
It’s natural universe, man.
To be here tonight
amid all these shining lights
as above the stars attract each other
in lonely void.
Clustered in constellation
here on Earth
we fill the emptiness
and comfort our hearts
with music and kind word.
So gather all
in circle dance
and square dance
forsake that lonely place,
And feel the natural tending
of universe
to filling of all-space.
