1.
Behind us
beyond the horizon
we left the wasteland.
Ahead
we steered
intuitively
to freedom instead
Of liberty
we often recited
an incantation
to strengthen resolve
In laws
we tried to
codify what was
beyond laws.
For a moment
it was enough
to be and let be
'Til we spilled
across a continent
to face another sea
At that moment
though we hadn’t
the foresight
our freedom
came to an end
A species
standing a-straddle
history’s stream once again
Gently rocking
from side to side
finally choosing
the familiar bank
I repeat,
not knowing
the choice was made.
2.
And so we continued
from star-burst
to eclipse
By rockets red glare
crossing oceans
over there
Sending millions
to a grave
convinced liberty
would be saved
'Til in the era
called Pax-Americana
the wasteland
again was made
By the very sacrifice
to flag and country
patriot's always make.
And now a twist
of history and
Post-American
generations decouple
from the common cause
And look to themselves
and choose
the tyranny of laws
And in their ignorance
or their innocence
they find on this new,
now old shore
A theory of justice
written by man’s hand
that’s nothing more
than a return
to the wasteland.
