“Father,” the boy said, “what is the quest
of man?”
“Why, nothing more than to see beyond
the naked eye my boy.”
They walked a time and a ways without
speaking.
Finally the boy said, “Father, how does
a man see beyond the naked eye?”
“Oh, what a question to ask,” said the
man.
There was silence for a space.
“By learning all the variations on the
theme, does a man see beyond the naked
eye.”
“And then …?” said the boy.
“And then …” said the man,
“he sees the sum.”
A moment.
“And then the sum!”, said the boy excitedly.
“And then he knows all the themes and
all the variations,” said the boy aloud.
“Doesn’t he father?”
The man stopped walking and looked at the
boy.
“No my son,” he said quietly, “and then he
can ignore the theme and forget the variations.”
They walked on for a ways and a time
and a space.
