His hand he holds
above the book
as if in benediction
As he notes
the poets time & outlook
on love & faith & Dickinson
He makes a comment
he makes a connection
between poems & poets & eras
Yet the poets aside,
the poems alone
make no claim on a common lineage
Still it’s alright
as he sincerely sides
with the poets manifest &
He cannot teach
and they cannot learn
the muse & magic
of a line full born
Yet he tenures his best
and if just one of the rest
continues in the poetic tradition
It will be due
we’ll see
to a common benediction
