That Bright Spot

A room of windows
western tending in a
northern facing house
To a small boy,
Huge.

So bright
during dinner
preceded by prayer
Uncle Rayburn
invoking
joined hands.

Such food
is seeming
a dream
of colors and smells
in a house-full
of folks
Uncle Rayburn
jokes.

The greens;
beans, turnips, spinach
cooked,
cucumbers & leafy greens
non-cooked.

The yellows;
squash & corn on the cob &
cheesy macaroni &
the deviled-part
of a hard-boiled eggs
heart.

The reds;
tomato and a pepper
named Bell,
never touched
just as well.

The whites;
potatoes mashed, potatoes salad,
bread & biscuits &
gravy rolls.
Milk,
for boys.

Pass around the meats,
usually chicken
parts from these parts
sometimes of breaded pork &
red gravy, not much
of breaded steak
country-fried and such.

Around a table
a moment
as the years
take their lot
to the far corners
from
that bright spot.
